Sakis Arabatzis – Curriculum Vitae
Born in 1960, Sakis Arabatzis was just 15 when he first began – on a trial basis – to conduct the Thessaloniki Boy Scouts Choir. He subsequently went on to become principal conductor for the choirs of the Panagouda and Aghios Demetrios churches (patron saint of Thessaoniki), and those, among others, of the Alexandreio, Northern Greece Conservatoires and Bolero conservatoire of Thessaloniki.
* As a Soloist (Tenor) he has performed all over Greece, and abroad. He has appeared as a soloist on a recording made by the City of Thessaloniki Philharmonic Orchestra and Choir, under Nikos Astrinidis. He has appeared on numerous occasions with the City of Volos Polyphonic Choir, conducted by Yiannis Karkalas. He has also performed as a soloist (tenor) at the Thessaloniki Dimitria Festival and, to international audiences, at events in the Thessaloniki – Cultural Capital of Europe programme (1997).
* As a vocal and opera coach he has worked with more than 15 conservatoires and music schools, preparing many students for successful careers as solo performers or teachers. He is an Artistic Director of a number of musical institutions, teaching courses in advanced theory and Byzantine music, by appointment to the Ministry of Culture.
* Vocal Coaching Studio.
Many of his former students have gone on to enjoy distinguished careers as recording artists. Examples include:
Nikos Vertis, Sotis Volanis, Giorgos Xanthiotis, Kyriakos Papailias, Panos Nikou, Panos Kalidis, Christos Avramidis, Alexandros Hatzis, Sofia Vika, Christos Kostaras, Constantinos Seretis, Constantinos Karayelis, Pavlos Paounis, Despina Filippou, Christos Androulakis, Giorgos Tsakas. He is rightly regarded as the ‘vocal coach to the stars’.
Mr. Arabatzis has now produced a DVD featuring the 30 years of his career in music (1975-2005) covering the following areas:
1. As Choral Conductor
2. As Soloist (Tenor)
3. As Vocal Coach
He is the father of four children:
a) Constantinos b) Katerina c) Vangelis d) Valentina
All four children are keen musicians. Constantinos (Ntinos) –a music teacher – wrote the music for the song Xespao, to lyrics by Anthi Theodoridou, performed by Kyriakos Papailias on the CD Axizeis Polla, issued on the Vasipap label
Mr. Arabatzis is also a composer of original choral works, most notably the very successful Ta paidia, ta poulia kai ta louloudia [The children, birds and flowers], which appeared in 1980 and for which he wrote both lyrics and music.
